An Eye Full of Trouble

Because Yarmer Farm run a virtually closed flock, and we hope maintain a high standard of flock husbandry we have few if any outbreaks or instances of disease or infection.
2009 however was a wake up call..

All our stock return from shows to an isolation paddock approved and inspected by DEFRA. Thank goodness we have this facility! Five days after returning from the 2009 Yorkshire Show we spotted the first signs of trouble - big trouble!

Red Eye, Pink eye, New Forest Disease, call it what you will but we had it - and soon it spread to the entire show group of some 24 sheep. Our attendance at the next 3/4 shows was cancelled.

Our hard working vets and the family attended to each animal every 48 hours with the necessary antibiotic creams.

The infection was stubborn to shift and even by isolating group after group it took us 6 months to crack the problem.

Suddenly one day in January 2010 we were clear and so far no sign of return. The infection can only have come from contact with other animals at the show, so no matter how good our own on farm bio-security and husbandry the isolation paddock is a must, and showing is a calculated risk.
